HOME E-NEWS Sunday School About The Orthodox Church GREAT LENT AND HOLY PASCHA ABOUT US OUTREACH MINISTRY FESTIVAL SCHEDULE

Welcome to our Sunday School!

As with all other Youth ministries, our Sunday School is one of our priorities! We are very happy this year to have new teachers, improved curriculum and a lot of zeal for the upcoming ecclesiastical year.

Our mission:

To help educate, develop and support our youth in a loving, caring and creative environment where Christian learning is a way of life. Thus teaching by example and also reinforcing our Orthodox Christian ethos which finds expression in the love for God, one self, one another, and our Greek Orthodox Church.

Teachers and volunteers are still needed to ensure a successful and smooth year for our children and youth. If you have the heart and desire to teach and work with our children in our Orthodox education program, please see Penelope Ballas-Stewart as soon as possible.

NURSERY & PRESCHOOL SUNDAY SCHOOL: We have a nursery available to all parents during Divine Liturgy services as needed. At this time, we do not have a full-time volunteer to staff the nursery. A schedule will be posted on the bulletin board just outside the Nursery for those who would like to volunteer their time working in the Nursery.

There will be two shifts each Sunday beginning Sunday, September 7th (the

1st Shift will be from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. during Divine Liturgy services; the

2nd Shift will be from 11 a.m. until 12 Noon for the Sunday School hour).

We will need a minimum of two volunteers for the Sunday School hour – one to lead our Preschool program and one to assist. The program schedule and all materials will be available at all times in the Nursery.

We are not asking for an every Sunday commitment, but that volunteers sign up for the Sunday’s they are available and wish to commit their time. The success of our youth programs is directly linked to the involvement and participation of our parents as well as those who have the heart and desire to teach and support our children.

As our Parish continues to grow, so does the need for more volunteer involvement; what better place to give your time than with our precious children. Please contact Penelope Ballas-Stewart if you are interested in teaching, being one of our substitute teachers or volunteering in our Sunday School program in any way.

“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these’ ”

– Matthew 19:14

Education, Culture and Youth Diakonia:
On behalf of the Diakonia Committee, I would like to thank the Philoptochos for sponsoring the luncheon on Sunday to help raise money for the youth of our parish and to all the parishioners who stayed to support it.  It was a great success!  Thanks also to Felix who volunteered to cook the delicious food and to all those that helped serve and clean up!
I would also like to commend our parents on the attendance this past Sunday.  We had close to 100 percent participation in Sunday School!
Thank you to each of the teachers that are committing themselves to teach our youth!  We are still in need of parent assistants and nursery volunteers.  PLEASE contact me if you can in any way help with either of these areas.  A nursery schedule is already posted on the bulletin board and sign up sheets for parent assistants will be posted on the doors of the lower school classrooms.
Again, thank you all for your support and you will continue to see our program grow!

SIMPLE RULES FOR PROTECTHING CHILDREN WITH CELL PHONES

1) Circumvent access to pornography at the cell phone store: You must be 18 years or older to purchase a cell phone. Make sure that if you purchase a cell phone for a child or minor in your household that you do not enable Internet access or access to content that is adult-oriented.

2) Check your cell phone bill: Review charges to your cell phone bill. Make sure that you arenot being charged for packages or services you either do not need or did not sign up for. If you have a question about what services you have active on your phone(s), call your wireless carrier.

3) Get educated: Clergy should either call the Department of Internet Ministries with questions or research more information online at sites such as CNet’s Keeping Kids Safe Online, GetNetWise, ProtectKids, or SafeKids.com. Additionally, parishes should take an proactive role in conducting seminars for parents and GOYA members and even publishing Internet safety guides in their bulletins.

4) Talk about the issues: Talk about these issues with your children and even their friends’parent. Even though you may be educated, parents of your child’s friends may not be; and they may have unknowingly given their children cell phones with access to pornography.

As the adoption of emerging technologies quickens, the challenges we confront as parents, clergy, and Christians will not only become greater, but they will also become more complex. For this reason, we must heed the Apostle Paul’s exhortation to comfort one another and edify one another (1 Thessalonians 5:11). If we stay grounded in the message and teachings of Scripture, then we will be able to confront and overcome whatever challenges may come before us.
